Feedback on Lisbon District Conference
Dear Prestigious and Toastmasters friends, (a "little long" mail....)
I would like to share with you few points from the Lisbon District Conference 2011.
First of all, it was a successful event!
Almost 300 people attended.
And, as in Toastmasters we learn by doing, and observing, the Conference organisation run smoothly, no big issues.
I'm sure the next one will be even better.
About the event:
One of the Lisbon organisers, Luis Caetano, opened the session dressed as a "Conqueror", and gave an amazing speech based on the slogan of the conference "Spirit of Great Discoveries"!
We all had the pleasure to meet Pat Jonhson, Toastmaster International President.
She gave a number of speeches and workshops, which were very "educational and inspiring".
And, we also had the opportunity to learn more about the TMI organisation.
We had the pleasure to attend the workshop of Darren Lacroix, 2001 International Speech Contest winner.
Darren shared many valued information on where and how we can improve our "deliveries".
And some who volunteered to give a short speech for a "study case" had the opportunity to receive feedback "on spot".
It was a great experience, and, we all agreed with Darren on, to master our communication skills we need a lot of stage time, stage time, stage time!
I had the great opportunity to be the target speaker for the Evaluation Contest, and to be able to speak in front of almost 300 people (my first big stage time!) and also be blessed with 10 high profile evaluations as feedback!
Plus, all the other participants who came to me afterwards to share their very honest, warm, and supportive comments on my delivery.
Priceless!!!
And, the greatest moment of all, the Speech Contest!
What could I say???? Amazing!
A quite difficult task for the judges!
Then, comes the "not such a good fun" part of the event (the bones of the fish, as I say), but also important.
The elections of the upcoming Area Governors, Division Governors, and District Officers.
(By the way, to the ones who are not aware yet, our dearest Angela Dunbar will be our next Area Governor for Area H1 - Congrats Angela)
*** I take the chance, have a short break, to share something with you: Someone in our club asked me "is that really important to vote on those elections?"
Well, let's put it this way.
We all love Prestigious Speakers, and we believe it is the best club in BCN, right!? (other clubs might disagree, but it is also "ok"!)
So, in order to be great and achieve greatness, we need to know where we want to go, and how to get there (as it is said, know the rules first, then break them!).
Therefore, we need to make sure our leaders are aligned with our values and goals.
Saying that, we are the ones to choose our leaders!**** Got it?
To finalise, we had experienced Tuna Music (yes, funny name, an old and traditional type of Portuguese music) in our lunch break during the conference.
And, FADO MUSIC during the Gala dinner.
And.... as all toasmasters events, educational, entertaining, networking, and FUN!
Prestigious Speakers was present, represented by Angela, Gunther, Xavier and myself.
Barcelona Toastmasters was also present represented by Kai, Marina and Patricia.
Pride Toastmasters was also present, represented by Angela on behalf of Dale who was a candidate for Division Governor.
If I may, I recommend all of you to consider attending those conferences.
The learning opportunity is priceless!
The next one is on November 25th in Basel, Switzerland!
Thanks for your time, and see you in our meeting next week.
Cheers,
--

Moments of truth
Hello,
This was the title, “Moments of truth”, of the educational session given by Dima at the meeting of the 19th April 2011. The title is inspiring, seems to drive ourselves in a travel through our own identity and purpose of life. But it was quite more practical, about the Club Quality Standards Evaluation under the criteria given by Toastmasters International. Great job by Dima, organizing people in groups, going each of the groups through a different topic, making group conclusions, and finally Dima putting together the full job: most things are running quite satisfactory, some other could improve!
Claudia, the Toastmaster of the day, drove the meeting in a perfect and smooth way despite the many changes in the agenda she had to take care. The word of the day, “outlier”, (difficult to find in a dictionary!), defined those people who are able to open new ways and opportunities and can improvise and take the best of themselves to push situations ahead.
We had 8 guests, 7 of them long term guests, (people that have attended several meetings and are interested in becoming members), and one new guest. The one word to describe what they felt at the meeting: “surprised”, “outlining”, rich”, “challenging”, “awesome”, and ”organized”. For the new guest, it was “great entertainment”.
Josefine made her speech from the Competent Communication Manual #5 – “Your Body Speaks”, with the title “The language of the body”, about the dialogue between the body and the mind of the runners when preparing challenges (Josefin prepared and run a half marathon!)
Ricardo made his speech from the Competent Communication Manual #6 – “Vocal Variety”, with the title “TONES”, showing in a very practical way how the knowledge and practice about how to say, module and pronounce sentences can give them either one sense, or the contrary.
Changing the usual order of the agenda, Veronika, the Table Topic master, invited Marie, Alvaro, Ivan and Edith to build together, one after each other, a history about the Easter eggs.
Tulia, within the Club business section, informed about the elections to take place for the roles of officers for the next period July 2011 / June 2012. As a signal of the good health of the club (identified with the “Moments of true” section and with the guests’ list), Ricardo, head of the election committee, explained that there are more candidates than roles, and this is fantastic!

Do you want to be the Toastmaster of the day?
I wanted, and I accepted the suggestion to be the Toastmaster of the day (TMOD) at the Prestigious Speakers meeting the Tuesday 29/3/2011.
This post tries to explain my personal experience. It was my first time in this role, and I tried to strictly following the recommendations of the check list. The most important: to be aware that the TMOD is the central role of the meeting, and preparation is very important. The TMOD is the meeting chair, and all what happens there goes through his/her role.
The TMOD opens his role with a short introduction, called “The word of the day”, with the purpose of sharing experiences or personal thoughts.
I explained to the audience my view about the 3 barriers, and the corresponding bridges, that any can suffer when facing the public:
FIRST, the nerves: I feel just nervous, frozen, collapsed. It’s very easy to identify.
It´s a physical experience; no need to any reason. It can happen in other situations and scenarios, as delivering a test, at a police control, with a new girl friend …
The bridge: You can work it with physical exercises, breathing, relaxing …, as it’s a very physical feeling, everybody can find their own way
SECOND, the audience: I am afraid, what this entire people in front of me will think of me?
It´s a physiological experience; the fear to what the others can think of us.
The brigde: figure out that the audience doesn’t exist. Of course exist, but not as something in front of me. The audience is myself; the audience is part of my own internal dialog. Therefore when talking to me, I am talking to the audience.
THIRD, the content of the speech: what I am going to tell? Is it enough prepared?
It´s a physical experience.
The bridge: It’s a matter of preparation. Writing it all what you want to say before, practicing and rehearsing with a recorder, a web cam, may be with friends and family, and after practicing it, you practice and rehearse it again …
Meeting the barriers and finding the bridges is something that we can manage, I can, you can …
The word of the day was YOU CAN.
The Toastmaster of the day introduces afterwards the General evaluator (Rose), the Table Topic master (Anne) and the speakers.
The first speaker was Mattew, with his Competent Communication Manual #1 (Ice Breaker) speech `'Obsession is the route to Success'.
The second speaker was Bettina, with her Competent Communication Manual #1 (Ice Breaker) speech `DISCOBALL.
The third speaker was Nizami with his Competent Communication Manual #2 (“Organise Your Speech) “Heroes Every Day”
And the fourth speaker of the session was Ricardo with his speech from the Competent Communication Manual #5 (Your Body Speaks),`“Be young forever”
After the speakers comes the evaluators: Florian evaluated Mathew’s speech, Ignasi evaluated Bettina’s speech, Marie evaluated evaluate Nizami’s speech and Josefin evaluated Ricardo’s speech
After the evaluators, the General Evaluator took the stage, presented her report and her team as well: the Ah counter Arthur), the Timer (Antonio) and the Grammarian (Carol).
It was the end of the role, and it had been a positive and challenging experience. I´ll try again.
Till the next,
Alvarohttp://blog.prestigiousspeakers.com

Happy 6th Birthday Prestigious!
6 years ago, a group of pioneer speakers and leaders founded the first English-speaking Toastmasters Club in Barcelona: Prestigious Speakers. Today, we are almost 50 members that gather every 1st, 3rd and 5th Tuesday of the month to have a lot of fun improving our public speaking and leadership skills.
To the founders, friends and members of Prestigious Speakers: Happy Birthday!

San Valentine’s “irritation”
Daniel made his debut as Toastmaster at the Tuesday 15th February 2011 meeting, and gave us a strong and positive message: “Treat the other as you like to be treated”. What was funny is that this fundamental principle can have some reverse side when San Valentine’s Day arrive and roses appear at home. San Valentine’s day can go together with the word of the day, “irritation”. As it was a very personal view, I leave the topic here, and the reader can follow the story in his/her own way. Daniel was quite brave taking the role, because he was “invited“ to take it on the very same day, due to a last minute cancellation.
Our neighbors downstairs at Casa Orlandai this time were a mediation group. Difficult cohabitation of one group (meditation group) that creates silence and introspection as a purpose of having personal development together, with another group (us, the Toastmasters!) which create laughs, applauses, noises and voice projection with the same purpose of having personal development together.
Quite a number of guests! As Phil, the SAA, is very strict with not allowing anybody going in when the meeting has started, the late arrivals slipped into the room through the back door silently, and final attendance number never is clear.
Topic Table Master Florian was challenging as usual. The first speaker was myself, and afterwards Marian, Manuel (a daring guest!), Claudia and Dale (DTM!). The speaker had to choose a structure: /one, two, three/, /god, better, best/, /past, present future/ or … /changing the subject/. And the topic was a word chosen at random from the Toastmaster magazine.
Speeches were stimulating, practical and suggestive
Stimulating, because Peter explained that “Lady Luck” is always there waiting for us. Peter’s speech was the Competent Communication Manual #8 - Get Comfortable With Visual Aids.
Practical, because Dima’s speech “There’s no such thing as a small...” made evident that all we have too much clothes in our wardrobes and told very sophisticated technique to adapt what we need with what we have. (“Competent Communication Manual #8 - Get Comfortable With Visual Aids” )
Suggestive, because Tulia told a nice tale “The Knight in Rusty Armor”, arousing emotion while telling the story as a speech (Storytelling #4 - The Touching Story)
Xavier (DTM!), Carol and Arthur where the constructive evaluators.
Our President Tulia addressed some business club: people to take part on the March contest! And a new challenge proposed by Are Governor, Kai, explained by Dima: a contest in Spanish language for all Spanish clubs!
Edith put order as General Evaluator with her professional and DTM’s capacity to influence. Ignasi (Ah-counter) was very original counting and reporting the use of fillers, because he counted in cents of Euro instead of units of words. As each filler added up 5 cents and each use of the “word of the day” subtracted 5 cents from the total, final figures were a little bit confusing. All had to pay, but Dale made money from it (0 fillers + several words of the day) We have to work a little bit more the system, and of course we need the pig-saver to keep the money collected! Bettina made her debut as Timekeeper, and she had a perfect control of the times (all speakers and evaluator reached the red light!), and Mathew made his debut as Grammarian. He found things to improve on all the speakers!
Till the next!

OMmmmmm..... OMmmmmm.....
No claps!
What an inconvenience for Toastmasters!
Clapping is our way of cherishing, motivating and thanking our speakers and leaders (despite of Florian always insisting that we should never "thank the audience")
But also a way to make us to feel good in our own private "Hall of Fame"!
This time we had the surprise of having a "meditation group" in the room below, and they asked us to "please keep it quiet"!
OMmmmmmmmmmm....... OMmmmmmmmmmmmm...
Lately we have been "tested" quite often in our ability to be creative, flexible and to use our spontaneity (the word of the day!) to handle the meetings!
Once again, we managed! Through everyone's collaboration and proactiveness.
Without any further ado, let's go to the meeting.
Phil, our SAA told me at the beginning, only 19 confirmed!
Only!?
Well, it didn't last too long to realise that we would have a packed meeting.
Over 40 in the end. More than 10 guests!
Great!
As the President I had the pleasure to introduce and welcome the two new members of our Prestigious Speakers team: Bettina and Mathew!
Welcome onboard guys!
The evening was led by the experienced and entertaining Florian Mück!
He led us through the evening explaining each section of the Agenda, and introducing every leadership role and speaker precisely and humourously.
The Table Topics Master was Josefin Berg, and she played around with "Subjects" and "Action".
Asking her TT Speakers to deal with a situation where they had to choose an unknown tool to fix something.
Using the following structure:
How would you fix XXX with YYY!???
Where X would be the "subject" and Y the "Action"
Coming up with funny situations as"
How would you fix a Hole with a Gavel?
How would you fix a Bulb with a Toilet empty roll?
And more...
Bettina and Mathew had their "baptise on cold blood" as they were called for the Table Topics experience.
Well done guys! Very brave!
For the prepared the speeches, what can I say?
They were absolutely great and entertaining.
One of those evenings when all the speeches are very well delivered and touch everyone's heart with their contents.
Ignasi Buch talking about a "lost friend" which was always in his heart. And after 12 years he had the great surprise to meet his friend again, and realised that they were closer than ever!
Claudia Cano telling us how she grew through her life from a moment where she was afraid of opening the doors life had put on her path, to another level where she had to choose between 2 or more doors, should I stay or should I go?, to the moment where she finds herself now.
Where she has no hesitation in opening the doors life brings to her. And telling us how wonderful, enlightening and challenging is to open, and cross those doors!
Also, our Toastmaster of the Evening, Florian Mück, delivered a "simulation" of a Radio Talking Show, where he was interviewed by Brenda Franks, for the release of his book "The Seven Minutes Star".
Being Florian creative and an "on spot" person, we all have to agree that his interviewer, Brenda, gave him a bit of "hard time".
Asking him precise and straightforward questions about his subject.
Well done for both of them! Great performance, great delivery, and great entertainment to all of us.
Not going into the evaluations. Just adding that they were again honest, motivating and constructive.
Adding value not only to each speaker learning process but also a great demonstration to the guests of what is a constructive feedback.
For Club Business I had a surprise, which was voted in favour. Therefore it will be introduced and applied from the next meeting onwards.
I'll be pleased to present you Mr. PS aka Pig Saver!
He will be the new Prestigious Speakers member, and will be part of the Evaluation team.
He will be working close to the Ah-counter collecting 5cents for every single "filler word" any of the participants might use throughout the meeting!
However, Mr. PS is generous and fair. He will also give you a credit against your debits for every word of the day you might use.
There you go guys! Watch out for your fillers!!!
We don't want Mr. Pig to become too fat! :-).
Oh... what are we going to do with this money?
Well, it is up to you!
It could be used for our Xmas Party.... it could be used for charity.... ideas welcome...
By Xmas we'll decide based on how much weight Mr. Pig will have!
That is all from me!
See you on the 15th!

We had no chairs!
We had a small logistic problem before starting our meeting on Tuesday 18th, we had no chairs!
Can you imagine the situation? Having a full room, many guests, and no chairs!
Well, but we are Toastmasters. We don't sit, we act!
And our SAA Phil and his team put their strong arms together and in no time, everything was sorted, and we could sit and enjoy the meeting.
As a President, I had decided to change a little the format of the meeting, and apart of the usual welcoming and guest introduction I gave the Club Business information beforehand. Which I believe it is important to reinforce here, please guys put in your Agenda:
Club Contest is on March 15th and we need Contestants!!!!
Be brave guys and challenge yourselves. Go for it!
Talk to our VPE, Rose Chong, to get the details about it.
After that, we had our Table Topics section, where Daniel Juling, challenged his "victims" with the Wikileaks subject.
Should the creators of Wikileaks be treated and chased as terrorists? Is Wikileaks a good or a bad thing?
Should we not live with more transparency? Well, there is still a lot to talk about the subject.
Great! Amazing speeches!
Ricardo Tellez inspired us and gave us more hope to our own future.
He informed us that it is scientifically proved that we can change our brain patterns!
You can replace bad habits by good ones!
Now you know! We have the power to change our inner world!
Start planning guys! Take your New Year's resolution list and look at it very seriously.
It can happen! Depends on you!
2nd Speech - Dima gave his speech about the Toastmaster World seen as from a Company perspective.
He showed us much more than what we already know.
And, I'm sure many of us have asked ourselves one day, how can a non-profitable organisation work so well, and with volunteers!!!!???
He also showed us their "numbers/profits" considered as "rainy days savings"!
WOW! There is so much to learn about the Toastmasters world.
I would love to own a company who works so well, where people is committed, happy, and is profitable!!!! Who wouldn't?
Thank you Dima! Another area to learn on Toastmasters.
3rd Speech - An AMAZING Icebreaker!
We couldn't believe it was Tobias Rodrigues first speech.
We were amazed how he told us about 3 very important times of his life using 3 examples of Sandcastles to illustrated them clearly.
Florian Mueck, his evaluator was very impressed and thanked him for becoming part of Prestigious Speakers team, saying that for sure he will contribute a lot to everyone's growth!
Well done Tobias!
4th Speech - Mireia Vives
Mireia is an artist, a painter. And she told us how all sort of arts have always been part of her life.
She compared the two great painters Picasso and Degas, and explained that despite their difference in style, they had something in common, which is something she says all sort of arts and artists have in common. Which is to ability to see beyond reality and express themselves through that.
It was very interesting. And she is definitely passionate about it.
I won't go through the evaluations, I will only say they were quite constructive, positive, motivational.
Many points were given to the speakers in order to improve for their next speech.
But we had a voting:
Best Table Topics Speaker - Peter Mckenzie
Best Speaker - Tobias Rodrigues
Best Evaluator - Florian Mueck
The meeting finished with the guests one word feedback on the meeting.
And among all, the ones I can remember are: "Amazing, Excellent, Entertaining, Fun, Enjoyable...." and more.
Well, I hope you could get a grip of it!
See you next Feb 1st.
Cheers
Tulia

Home is where you want it to be!
Or home is where your heart is? May be where you get your money? Twenty answers mean twenty views! With the word of the day, “home”, Phil, the Toastmaster of the day, opened the communication part of the first 2011 year PS Meeting, on Tuesday 4th January 2011.
There were some old and new guests, from UK, USA, Madeira, Bulgaria, Argentina, Germany and Barcelona.
The Table Topic Master, Gunter, proposed a very interesting exercise: imagine you are in year 2015. You remember you were living in Barcelona in year 2010. After those 15 years, what do you remember from those days?
Great speeches by Florian, explaining what happens when the boss has just reported to his employees that the bonus expected for the year is gone because one of the directors has disappeared with the company money… and Dale presenting the new TM club in Barcelona, the BCN Pride Toastmaster club. Both of them advanced speakers, so evaluations was a difficult task even for experienced evaluators as Markus and Edith.
And Phil, the one man band of the day (TM and SAA), closed the meeting after some nice gifts from the guests about the meeting: “Very exciting”, “nice meeting”, “exciting meeting”, “enjoying a lot”, “interesting experience”, “enjoyed role play”, “Prestigious”…some new words for the “PS flattery words bank”!

Message in a bottle
December falls always into our lives suddenly and surprisingly; and the last meeting of the year, on the Tuesday 21st December 2010, is there. With double enthusiasm, because the performance has two acts, the first at Casa Orlandai with the regular meeting, and the second , the Christmas Party at, La Cave, a nice restaurant and wine cellar in the neighborhood.
The regular party was governed by the symbol X. The X, the double XX and the triple XXX can have a number of meanings, like a wildcard, can be adapted to a number of situations, as the Toastmaster of the Day, Florian, explained.
Irene, new at the role of Table Topic Master, stimulated our imagination with various challenging situations where Table Topic speakers had to put into scene (put a // ..air controller…torero.. football player.. opera diva..toast master…. president of government..// …. in your life!!)
Speeches by Alvaro, selling hot air balloons, Alex, with his Guinness record (not official) of time to prepare a Competent Communicator project, and Rose, our banker, making clear that bank services are always cheap.
The second act was the most important, the Christmas party at La Cave, a very nice place and an attractive discovery for most of us. The game there (besides an excellent dinner) was playing with bottles, but only with the bottles, not with its content! There are so many bottles of all categories at La Cave, magnificently organized and described by poetical sentences! Topic Table impromptus revealed the hidden relationship of the speakers and the bottles.
Next year will be a good year for toastmasters, no doubt. This is the advantage of the activities where you only can improve!
